While the two lifestyles may appear contradictory, we repeatedly witness a similar kind of misfit who discovers salvation in the immersive high-energy of punk and the commitment to intensity in military service. Often, it tends to be an individual looking for an alternative path or complete escape from the mainstream through an adopted communal structure with common goals to supplement their blood family’s dysfunctions. Then, it’s through the punk gang (or community) and the military unit in which a collective series of initiation and stacked experience carries one through.

Through these heightened extremes come inherent tragedies that often betray initial strivings for a better world––drugs/alcohol, PTSD, and sudden death of close friends––all which often seem inevitable pitfalls given the fierce excess of these respective lifestyles, sometimes mirroring traumatic events that led those into punk or military to begin with; a self-fulfilling prophecy that often proves difficult to escape from.
